The first Armenian Renewable Energy web portal designed with EU support to encourage the development and financing of renewable energy in Armenia was launched December 6 by Minister of Energy, Mr. Armen Movsissyan, together with the Charge d’affaires of the Delegation of the EC to Armenia, Mr. Raul De Luzenberger.

The portal www.renewableenergyarmenia.am encompasses all relevant information on renewable energy in Armenia. The web portal was developed by Danish Management Group together with the local consultants. On 6 December 2007 in Yerevan, the main results of the EU funded Project “Support to the Energy Policy of Armenia” were presented. The Project consists of two parallel components and provides support to the Government of Armenia (GoA) in the realization of its energy policy with a view to the decommissioning of Armenian Nuclear Power plant (ANPP) and increasing the use of renewable energy (RE). Danish Energy Management A/S has performed the work in a consortium with NNC (Great Britain) and in active collaboration with local experts. The project amounts to a sum of approximately 1 million euro including equipment. It has lasted 22 months and will end mid December. Under the decommissioning component of the Project, international and local experts of the Project have assisted the GoA to make a principle decision on the preferred ANPP decommissioning option and have developed a Decommissioning Strategy based on “Sequential dismantling”. A corresponding comprehensive Decommissioning Action Plan, including timeframe, had been developed. The RE component of the project has assessed the technical and economical potential for renewable energy options (hydro, wind, solar and potentially biomass and geothermal) of the Republic and, in particular, in the Lake Sevan basin. Beside, comprehensive bankable feasibility studies for the most promising options, taking into account the potential for financial support under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism have been prepared. All results are presented on the first Armenian bilingual RE web portal (www.renewableenergyarmenia.am , www.verakangnvoghenergiahajastan.am). “Our quality of life and economic security are dependent on a stable and secure supply of affordable energy”, Minister A. Movsissyan says. “Encouraging the production and development of RE in Armenia is a very important part of the energy policy of the Republic. We expect that RE will come to play the same prominent role of supply in Armenia as in many EU countries”. Mr. Raul De Luzenberger stressed that “this portal is a way for Armenia to be proactive and open in responding to changes in energy technology while protecting the environment. It also supports other initiatives by the European Union to explore the feasibility of developing renewable and clean energy in Armenia.” Mr. Raul De Luzenberger also said that the contribution of renewable energy in Armenia is growing, and the web portal and the results of the EU funded project establish foundation for further development of renewable energy in Armenia. The Armenian Renewable Energy Portal provides insights into the RE area in Armenia with coverage of the updated information on the RE potential in the different marzes of Armenia, productions data for existing power plants, links to possible investors and credit institutions. The portal helps investors stay on the top of current renewable energy industry and provides all news in Armenia energy sector, regulations and legislation, tariffs, participating public companies, technological innovations, and energy sector trends. The inauguration of the portal will also open business-to-business activities where manufacturers, distributors, and marketers worldwide can conduct business in Armenia and online access the latest market information on renewable energy.
