Danish Management Group Thailand is involved in several regional projects.
Danish Management Group established a
Thai subsidiary office in June 2004, and the office became "official"
in October 2004, after the end of our Danida-funded projects, when we
moved out of the Thailand Department of Energy Development and
Efficiency (DEDE) and into our office at the UBC II Tower on Sukhumvit
Road in Bangkok. In the folllowing there is a summary of some of our
ongoing projects.
1. Capacity-Building on CDM for the Private Sector
This
second, follow-on project on CDM is headed by Danish Management Group
providing technical back-up. It was scheduled to terminate by 31
October 2005, but the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok has in the
meantime requested further assistance from Danish Management Group to
fill the gap between now and possibly until the start-up of a
comprehensive Project Development Facility, which is planned to be out
for an EU Tender some times during the first quarter of 2006.
During the present project, coaching and training of local
consultants in preparation of CDM Project Design Documents (PDD) has
been conducted. Project Design Documents have been prepared for 5
project activities, namely 5 methane capture and heat/power generation
projects
§ three activities which in the starch industry,
§ three pig-farms bundles into one CDM activity,
§ one activity in the palm oil mill sector
At present an additional two PDDs are under preparation.
Next
stage is to validate the projects by an independent Designated
Operation Entity or DOE. Proposals from three DOEs have been received
and the validation will commence in very near future.
At present Emission Reduction Purchase Agreements (ERPA)
are also being negotiated, and on the 28 October the Danish Embassy has
signed the first two agreements with owners of CDM project activities
prepared under the present Danish Management Group project. The two
projects will eventually contribute with GHG emission reduction of over
400.000 tCO2 over the 10 years credit period.
As mentioned earlier the Danish Embassy in Bangkok has
requested Danish Management Group to continue providing its services in
continuing the process of developing new CDM projects for the Danish
Government. An extension of the present project of EUR 53,600 has been
approved by DANIDA on the 27 October.
2. Technical Assistance on Energy Efficiency in Buildings in Mongolia
Danish Management
Group Thailand recently signed a contract with the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). The
assistance involves provision of advice in connection with
implementation of a demonstration project on energy audit design and
identification of Energy Efficiency measures in local governmental
buildings in the Capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbator. Another output of the
project would be a strategic plan on how to replication the findings of
the demo project to other municipalities. The contract amount is small
-- EUR 12,500 -- but strategic, and it is our first contract with the
UNESAP office. Input to the project is provided by Mr. Karsten Holm and
Mr. Monthon Kumpengsath.
3. Strategic Environmental Assessment of Community-based Tourism:
Danish
Management Group Thailand recently bagged its third project - and its
first large one - by signing a contract on an EU-funded project on
community-based tourism in Thailand. The EU EUR 120,000 project is led
by Dhon Sewatarmra, Managing Director of Danish Management Group
Thailand. The project team will work in 3 areas: 1) developing working
models for community-based tourism as an alternative livelihood for
coastal communities; 2) developing a self-monitoring tracking database
for coastal communities to monitor their progress in development
projects; and 3) designing an organization structure that can
sustainably manage community-based tourism with co-management approach.
The project will end in August 2006.
4. The First Asia ESCO Conference:
Danish
Management Group Thailand co-organized the first Asia ESCO conference
with the Japan ESCO Association on 20-21 October 2005 (see http://www.asiaescoconference.org/).
Prior to the conference, we also sponsored a half-day training course
on measurement and verification (M&V), led by experts from the U.S.
and Canada. The conference was attended by more than 300 participants,
including 250 international participants from outside of Thailand. It
turned out to be quite a success, with a number of good papers,
speakers, and efficient organization, led by our Bangkok Office
Manager, Ms. Chonticha. After the successful conference, the client,
the Japanese ESCO Association, has expressed interest in a follow-on
regional conference to be held in 2007.
5. DSM in Vietnam
Danish Energy
Management has been active in Hanoi as the technical consultants on
Vietnam's Phase 2 Demand Side Management (DSM) Program, working with
the government utility, "Electricity of Vietnam". This three-year
project runs through April of 2007. We have a team doing a week-long
DSM training course in Hanoi during 28 November - 2 December.
